Police brutality in the USA- what are the reasons for, and the effects of, racial profiling in American policing?

GP Internal Assesment

The identity of US minorities has been appropriated by the white population  throughout the years. Using only what they consider the bright or appealing side of their culture as costumes, also observed in the fanaticism for black music, hairstyles, and dancing style. Sadly however, they seem to ignore the baggage and history that comes with from it. They ignore the part of their identity is being left unseen through racism, the lack of opportunities, the lack of chances, and the lack of respect from others.

To what extent do femicides and misogynistic cultures affect the development of Mexico?

GP Internal Assessment

Mexico is a country in which culture and tradition are extremely valuable, however, their issues as a country arise from these and cause an extreme division in the development of their country. Mexican culture is a very misogynist one, which derivatives from aggression towards women and inequality in all aspects, either political, social, or economic. Mexico’s government and society need to develop, is often slowed down by gender related violence which could be shown in the form of femicides, which derives from social division and traditions that support inequality and their misogynist point of view.

This presentation was one of my favorites as it talks about an enormous problem that is happening primarily in the USA. Racism has taken many opportunities from black people, and now, it's taking their right to live freely again. For me, the IB learner profile that can be seen in this presentation would be "principled". This is because I looked to tell what was happening from a fair point of view. I stated all the facts and respected the rights that everyone should respect. This presentation taught me a lot about the world we live in, and it inspired me greatly to make a change.

The patriarchal abuse against women in Somalia and how it affects female genital mutilations.

GP Internal Assesment

Female genital mutilation (FGM),  is practiced in 30 countries in western, eastern, and north-eastern Africa, in parts of the Middle East and Asia, and within some immigrant communities in Europe, North America, and Australia. The WHO defines the practice as "all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injuries to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is estimated that more than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation in the countries where the practice is concentrated.

This presentation was eye-opening and brutal to digest. It talks about an attack to the human body physically and emotionally as it isn't with the consent of many participants. Meg Fassam-Wright, head of the National FGM Centre stated: " to prevent and eventually stop this problem, “ Is by working with girls and their families, raising awareness in schools and communities, and training professionals like teachers and social workers to spot girls at risk of FGM and know how to report it.” Like in the previous project, the Ib learner profile used in here its the "principled" one, as it made me reflect and learn from other cultures but also want to fight for the women's rights that are being taken away as of right now.

This issue affects me personally as a woman living in Mexico with a wish to one day make a change. I have been told to stay put, think about marriage, and nothing else. On the contrary, they tell my brothers to dream big, educate themselves, think about the future and the world they want to live in. I have been raised to dress a certain way, to not walk alone, to live in fear of what could happen if I ever go out at night.  I am privileged to be born in a comfortable economic situation in which I can educate myself, and fight this problem. However, as a privileged citizen, I have the responsibility to fight this inequality and raise my voice for the women who were not heard when they screamed. This project used the open-minded ib learner profile as gave me the opportunity to look at my culture and my history and see the wrong parts of it and inspired me to maybe think twice before celebrating a culture that it hurting me and many women in my country. I also got to analyze it from different political perspectives which increased my knowledge on the subject and also increased my ambition to make a change.
